Creating the Perfect Bright and Open Kitchen for Entertaining
As the heart of the home, your kitchen should function (and feel) just the way you need it to. This is especially true during the holiday season when guests seem to naturally gather right by the source of the food. But with a cramped, cut off space in an outdated 90’s design, the kitchen in our clients’ Meadowbrook house was a far cry from the open and welcoming space they wanted.
The Ask: An Updated, Open Space
To make the kitchen really work for this family of four, our team needed to find a way to open it up to other areas of the house, which meant that we would be reviving their family room as well.
First on the list, though, was to create that big, bright kitchen. The must-haves for the space included some sort of eat-in area, plenty of prep space to feed the entire extended family during the holidays, and a bar area all in a warm, modern, and fresh style.
Next, we’d tackle a gathering space that didn’t feel too separate from the kitchen, so that conversations could easily flow from one area to another.
Our clients also mentioned that they often invited their extended family members from overseas during the holiday season, so we wanted to stay cognizant of striking the balance between inviting warmth and spacious flow to create that ultimate welcoming feeling.
Creating the Perfect Spot for Gathering
Warm white cabinets and countertops throughout make the space feel even larger than it is, and beautifully complement the light oak flooring. Brushed gold hardware, fixtures, and pendant lights, along with stainless steel appliances are just the right touch of timeless glam, while floating shelves in a light oak and a bit of the original stone wall add a sense of depth.
An expansive island features a cooktop, ample space for spreading out ingredients, and plenty of closed storage. Meanwhile, a peninsula that comfortably seats four ensures the home chef won’t miss out on good conversation with mingling guests. And speaking of guests, a wet bar and beverage area along the back wall will help keep the drinks flowing even as the hosts are busy putting the finishing touches on the meal.
While thoughtfully-placed lighting gives this space the brightness it desperately needed, the large window above the sink draws in lots of natural light, creating a relaxing atmosphere even during cleanup.
Everything They Wanted
Far from where they’d started, our clients were blown away by the final reveal, and had this to say about their beautiful new space:
“Lauren provided us with initial drawings that we loved instantly. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire planning process, including the thoughtful consideration of materials and finishes. The process felt remarkably seamless, more like a conversation with a friend. Throughout, we consistently felt in capable and trustworthy hands, confident that the final result would surpass our expectations. This positive experience has not only made us repeat customers but would also undoubtedly lead us to choose New Market Design Build services again in the future. We do not hesitate to recommend New Market Design Build when people ask who we did our kitchen project with!” -Kate, Homeowner
